REVIEW: Life Zero #1, in which Marco Checchetto draws the zombie apocalypse

By Larry Jorash —Marco Checchetto has become one of my favorite artists in recent years, securing a place among my personal favorites through his work on Marvel’s Daredevil and Old Man Hawkeye titles. His action sequences are crisp and raw, and I also love the patience of his art; as if spinning paragraphs of it’s own on top of the main dialogue. All of this brings me to his latest book, Life Zero #1, a zombie apocalypse, no-holds barred thriller published by Ablaze.

The story in Life Zero #1 is vague, which lends the narrative an engaging shroud of mystery. A group of special forces soldiers break INTO a maximum security prison amid a zombie apocalypse to save their former comrade. This is a plot that just works for fans of high octane zombie action, which is a group that includes myself (if the group had elected positions, I’d be holding office tbh).

Another thing I really appreciated in this comics was that the art team was really given a chance to go all out, working in their own right to tell the visual part of this story. There are several pages of awesome, pristine action shots that are just gorgeous, some of which are actually full page spreads. It’s great stuff, if not too complicated. Really, what this book boils down to (for me, anyway) is a rising superstar artist like Checchetto (he’s currently drawing Marvel’s big winter event, after all) being allowed to do top-tier work, work that includes zombie action. I’m in, simple as that.

Lastly, a word about the work of colorist Andres Mossa in Life Zero #1. You can tell Mossa understood the job here completely. Mossa puts forth absolutely brilliant work giving life to the carnage, adding up to a great display of shading that really accentuates the tensest moments. If you like zombies and kinetic action comics, you should really consider picking this one up.

Overall: Life Zero #1 is a solid addition to the zombie apocalypse comics selection, with some absolutely wicked art, a must for fans of Marco Checchetto. 8.5/10
